You are clearly not black.

We're all black when the lights go out.

On the street, shots ring out. Dull thuds of hot lead hitting the brick, the pavement... The people.

As soon as the shooting stops and the tires squeal into the distance it feels like the entire world just let out a huge sigh. I rise from under the table I was taking cover beneath to a sight I'd hope I would have been able to leave in 'Nam. Broken glass litters the restaurant and the clock on the wall has been blown to pieces, gears and springs cover the ground surrounded by the remains of a neon sign that once read "Open for Business". From behind the counter I hear a soft whimper and my heart sinks into my gut.

As I dash behind the counter I see a pretty young girl, about 23 by my guess. I later found out her name was Janice, but what happened happened and I have to forget the details. You can't hang onto the past, or it will come back and bite you right in the ass one day.

I couldn't tell where she was hit from. Her once sky blue dress was soaked a grey red color from breast down. Blood had began to pool. I needed to act fast. I ran over and propped up her head. "I'm gonna help," I told her, "I'm gonna do my best to save you,"... She didn't respond. Time was short.

I took a steak knife from behind the counter and cut away at the area I figure the bullet had entered. If I was lucky it would have missed the heart, or any of the main arteries and just gone right through... If I was lucky. The blood gushed forth like a fountain and I could only apply force. From the pool of the crimson liquid at her back, I assumed it was through and through, so I put the small of her back, where I thought the hole to be, on top of my knee and pushed at the entry wound. She moaned through her teeth in anguish.

As I sat there watching this girl die in my arms with nothing I could do, I heard the wail of sirens and the honking of horns. Maybe they would make it. Maybe any second a paramedic would burst through the door and save this young womans life. Maybe... maybe.

As the ambulance pulled up and checked the scene , looking for the wounded with the glass snapping under their feet like twigs, the young woman with her whole life to live for went into her death throws. They weren't harsh, or violent. They were soft, and sad. Now was not her time, but life is a real bitch when it's feeling fickle. She died just as the man in white and blue jumped over the counter. He said he could take it from there.

I stood up drenched in blood that belonged to the girl that had just earlier served me my coffee and walked to the table that I had hidden under not but 15 minutes ago, and finished my now cold drink. I sat there until the police took me back to the station to get me cleaned up and and ready for questioning. That was the second time I've grown up in my life. The second time I'd had to sink or swim. That is why they call me Doctor. That is why I'm honored. For loosing someones life, but trying my damndest to save it.
