Discs / Machines Download System
« on: January 19, 2010, 04:03:28 am »
It's old...
It's decrepit...
It's Machines... in 32 friggin' megabytes.

The Machines Download System now works in Windows Vista/7. Check out that screenshot below. Yeah, that's Windows 7. And the MDS. Together.

If you're new, or have a really poor memory, I released the MDS back in the day to distribute Machines without having to worry about bandwidth issues by ingeniously compressing Machines, and providing a client for those too "slow" (read: retarded) to properly extract the files and get the game running. The aim was to reduce both bandwidth usage and support forum spam. And personal messages... addressed to me.

But, anyway...

3 issues I noticed upon running...

1.) Run this in administrator mode! Right click, "Run As Administrator".
2.) Mount the disc image yourself! The magic disk installer bundled with the MDS is meant for Windows XP. However, the MDS will leave the Disc 2 disc image in your installation directory, so you can mount it yourself using something like Daemon Tools, or a newer version of MagicDisc.
3.) Many users may encounter a missing dll file when attempting to run the game under XP compatibility mode, that file may be acquired here

The domain name unexpectedly expired, and I had to scrape together some funds to renew it.

Have fun, we've got it for another two years. :P

Mods / OPERATION: Shrink Machines
« on: May 04, 2008, 02:35:09 am »
OK, let's try and get machines shrunk down as far as we can for transmission over the net! Here's what I've accomplished:

models folder
BMP -- 56.3 MB
PNG -- 31.6 MB
JPG -- 15.3 MB

41 MB saved

gui folder
BMP -- 28.9 MB
JPG -- 3.3 MB

25.6 MB saved

sounds folder
WAV -- 54.8 MB
MP3 96 KB/s -- 27.8 MB
MP3 64 KB/s -- 18.6 MB

36.2 MB saved

flics/gui/v&d folder
BMP -- 5.8 MB
JPG -- 456.4 KB

5.4 MB Saved

Original Machines Folder -- 402.6 MB
Optimal Size Machines Folder -- 294.4 MB
108.2 MB Saved

7-Zipped Size -- 217.9 MB
76.5 MB Saved

Total Saved -- 184.7 MB

I'm planning to integrate functionality of downloading this compressed copy through the wiredforwar client. When the download is complete, the JPGs will be converted to BMPs, and the MP3s converted to WAVs.

I'm working on compressing the smacker files, that should help quite a bit.

Hogay's Bar / So I Passed Out During Biology Today
« on: March 14, 2008, 12:30:32 am »
It was somewhat embarrassing, and very confusing.

My teacher was giving us a homework assignment that consisted of putting together a comic strip. He pointed out an example on the wall, and I got up to look at it. As I walked toward it, my vision started fading to black around the corners until I couldn't see at all. This happened very fast. I heard the faint sound of scraping chairs on the ground, and opened my eyes, staring at the floor underneath me. My chest had landed on a chair next to my own desk, I was just kind of slumped on top of it horizontally. It felt like I just woken up from a very long nap. My teacher was leaning over next to me, asking if I was alright. I was feeling no pain, just a very dull numb feeling in parts of my body. He asked what happened, and I took a second to think about it. Then he asked if I had fainted. "I guess," I said, looking at all of the students just staring at me.

The whole situation was explained to me by one of my classmates. Apparently I just started swaying, and fell right into the chair. My teacher commented that I was only out for maybe two or so seconds.
"If you weren't unconscious, that would've hurt like hell," said my classmate. Well, good.

So I spent the last ten minutes of class in the nurse's office, getting my blood pressure checked. It was higher than normal, so I was advised to come and get it tested again tomorrow. I will.

Hogay's Bar / Linux for the Win.

From the article:,1000000567,10006217o-2000331777b,00.htm

So here's the funny thing. I've used Windows since 1.0. I've lived through the bad times of Windows/386 and ME, and the good times of NT 3.51 and 2K. I know XP if not backwards, then with a degree of familiarity that only middle-aged co-dependents can afford each other. Along the way, I've dallied with many other operating systems on many other platforms - but never with Unix and only lately with Linux.

Then how come I'm so much more at home with Ubuntu than Vista? It boils down to one abiding impression: Ubuntu goes out of its way to get out of your way, even if it doesn't succeed all the time. Vista goes out of its way to be Vista and enforce the Vista way. You must conform regardless of the implications.

Site Ideas / Google Apps for the Dev Team
« on: September 23, 2007, 10:44:56 pm »
I came across Google Apps quite awhile ago, and I thought that maybe it'd be good for the Machines 2 developers for collaboration. What do you think?

Give your users Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Talk accounts that use your own custom domain, helping them to stay connected and work together more effectively.

Collaborate and publish...
Google Docs lets users share files and collaborate in real-time. The Start Page is the first place your users will look to preview their inboxes and calendars, access your essential content, and search the web.
New! Google Docs now includes presentations.
