We need a Font for M2.
It must be in grayscale. The caracters for this font must be:

What if anyone wants to have these symbols in his nickname??

My suggestion for the font is plain Arial... Has all the symbols and is simple. (And the easiet to read. :-P)

Cheers

Yeah, kinda boring....

Can we create our own font or is it too much work?

Fonts aren't too hard to create - you just need to have a lot of time to put into them. Professional font designers can spend weeks getting everything right.

Arial is boring. I think some computerised font would work well.

I still have my original Machines disks and manual....

Computerised fonts are ugly and can be a nuisance to read. Just steal some free font from some website. If we can get one that is computerised but more compact (it's too wide) or something it might be OK though.

Yes, those computer fonts have big troubles with kerning.

I've found a few decent ones - Zero Hour looks good, if a little illegible in large chunks (we can revert to some other fonts on that site - honestly there are 235 techno/futuristic fonts on there, there's bound to be one that works).

Full List

We might have to create our own ,.!$%&/+-*()=?<> though.

I think Ethnocentric would probably be the best for what we show on the Human displays. It's fairly legible, at least in the quantities that we will use it, and carries the sci-fi/more advance humans thing well.

Also worth noting that you need the full 255 character set of western fonts. 128 character 7-bit set (i.e. no umlauts etc) isn't good enough for localisation.
Of course this doesn't even cover the major eastern localisation problems.
Ask me anything about Machines and I'll try to answer! I don't have the source code anymore. No idea what happened to it...

Actually, most of the fonts on that site include the majority of the characterset - I was checking Zero Hour earlier and it contains everything from Unicode 0021 to U-00FD, with the exception of the block from 7D to 9F, and [. In addition, it contains U+0152-3 (), 02C6 (), 02DC (), 2013-4 ( ), 2018-E excepting 201B (), 2022 (), 2026 (), 3039-A (), 20AC () and 2122 ().

We can probably replicate most of the missing block ourselves.

You could try looking here: http://www.aenigmafonts.com/

That site has heaps of interesting fonts.
