No, I never died. I don't think anyone on these forums did.

/is still here

I'm about one-quarter of the way through a 3-year multimedia uni course. By the end, I should be able to do fairly complex 3D models using Maya, etc. as well as textures and hopefully animation.

Might try to learn Blender or something during one of the end of year breaks.

After/if I complete this course I might do a 5-year course which is completely focused on game development.. if I can still stand going to uni after this course is over :P

Are you going to make a career out of computer game development? Sounds daunting anyways.

I'm going to try :)

Sounds daunting anyways.

The thing that troubles me the most is that there's a significant chance that many of the things I've learnt or will learn may be irrelevant in a few years due to changing technologies and cultures. I'm also not quite sure whether I'd want to work with an existing dev studio or go indie. It'll probably depend on how much money I'll have at the time, and whether or not I'll have to move to another state or overseas to work.

Yes, you have a point there. In ten years, or maybe even less, the technology that you learned will become obsolete. Because of this, you may out of luck to the younger generation after you. Computer Game Development is a battleground...

Aye.
That said, there's still developers around who worked on games back in the 80's and are still innovating now(eg. John Carmack - worked on Doom back when FPS games were a new genre, is now working on RAGE and apparently did quite a lot of the programming for the iPhone spin-off himself).

I guess as long as the basic technologies behind computers and gaming doesn't change too much in the near future, there shouldn't be too much to worry about, aside from learning new versions of software and programming languages.

It is good to see people still so enthusiastic about the game. And all you guys and galls out there with the know-how to make Machines (the rising) 2 work, your doing a fantastic job. The videos on the OpenMachines's youtube page are awesome. There does indeed still seem to be a passionate number of us remaining. Here always to support (I suck with computers, unless you want me to test out first designs or some other such primary creation).

I admire people who can think for several hours at a time, but thinking accomplishes nothing unless combined with physical work.

Well good to know you haven't left just yet. About the project, what we're making right now is not machines 2, but rather OpenMachines. The difference is that OpenMachines is going to be a remake of machines, with future tweaks, and it is and will be open source.
If you can't do much with a computer, I'm not sure what you can do to help, other than spread the word, and propose concepts. (actually that can prove quite useful)

Speaking about that... What programming language does the engine use? I have learned the basics of C#, next trimester we're going to see Java and more online assemblers and databases like MySQL.

And C# is evil (microsoft's attempt at keeping programs microsoft-dependent), but there are still ways to use it, which usually require recompiling  :x
