There are some people with 15+ posts that don't get the discs

And some with nearly 500 who don't have the disc because no one answers them when they ask how many MB disc 2 is :P

Less than one byte.

1. Open your text editor
2. type nothing
3. Save as setupy.bin
4. Burn
5. ??????
6. PROFIT
Wikipedia - now you don't need the 27 volumes of encyclopaedia britannica.

Actually, it is not less than one byte.

To save the file name and extension takes a minimum of 10 bytes.

And the fact that the minimum file partition size is on the order of kilobytes, then it will actually take up at least 1024 bytes of space.

I still have my original Machines disks and manual....

Question:

Sloik, since we are basically taking your copy of Machines, can't that be seen as piracy?

It's piracy just as much as downloading any other copy of abandonware is piracy.

No-one's ever taken a lawsuit agains HotU for piracy, and if the copyright holder asks for us to stop giving out the download, we will stop giving out the download.

I still have my original Machines disks and manual....

I see. The thing is, I'm just a little paranoid because ever since TPB experienced a temporary setback, I am kind of leery of downloading software. Thanks for clearing the issue though.

Hi.

I read all the posts in this topic, and many people complaining about - or defending the "5 posts rule".

I can understand both of the opinions, but i think you should think about advanages and disanvatages.

Lets see:  :bunny:if you let people freely download Machines
- a lot of people who dont care about anyone, will download machines, acting like monkeys in the forum, cheating and things like that. But you have the power to ban them or delete their account.
- but massive community will be slowly born and THAT is needed if you are really thinking about making Machines 2.

In a community there are stupid cheating people in every forum in every game - you cant filter them, you can just lower their number with this rule, but you also lower the numbers of people who cares about the game, and wants to help or just want to play with a great game and they dont create but dont destruct anything.

:bunny:if you DONT let people freely download Machines
- a few people will join who seems to be really helpful and really intelligent
- somebody comes and somebody leaves --- this is not going to be a growing community!
- creating Machines 2 will always be a dream

You cant let that be Sloik!

Please all of you let me know what U think

(Sorry for my mistakes)

I'll come up with a more creative way to keep people from downloading and leaving. That's the true problem with letting people download it for free.

How about you remove the fact that you can download the game from the site. Just have it known about the forums here. That way people googling "download machines" wont find this place, but people looking for "Machines Acclaim RTS" yaddah yaddah might stumble upon this here forum.

Never know.
Chill out!

I am not chilled in!

I'm pretty glad I stumbled upon this site, I swore I was the only person to have ever played the game! Since I bought the only copy I've ever seen of the game. :P

Recently I lost the 2nd disc of the game. Hopefully my posts are intelligent enough for you all. :)

I dont think people will leave once they've got the disks - this site is basically that only one around which has any uptodate content on about machines. once people have found it they tend not to forget it , where else can you get support and mods on such an old game like machines?

Surely if they know about machines and can actually be bothered to find this site then they deserve to download the discs. and if you find that for whatever reason the post count is low and/or the SPAM count is high then you can kick their sorry ass goodbye!!

Yeah, it should be a free download. How about a DEDICATED .Torrent download from this website and some DEDICATED seeders. it means that you don't have to use a direct download therefore eliminating Sloiks bandwidth problem and everyone who wants the game can have it. You could even make it so that they just download a self extracting executable that installs a patched version of Machines with stuff like the Multiplayer patch etc. Now we are all happy we can dream about fluffy white bunny rabbits in fields full of nice pretty flowers and a blue sky with fluffy clouds etc. AND A GUY WITH A CHAINSAW CUTTING THE LITTLE RABBITS TO PIECES.

Hmmm, that was a metaphor...             ...for...               ....uhhhh.....                   .......something. lol

OK, I am serious about the torrent though. Would it be possible to do the self-extracting thing?

The above post makes me angry.

if you find that for whatever reason the post count is low and/or the SPAM count is high then you can kick their sorry anus goodbye!!
Correction: if I find that they're spamming, I can kick their sorry anus that now owns machines goodbye. That doesn't work for me.

Yeah, it should be a free download. How about a DEDICATED .Torrent download from this website and some DEDICATED seeders.
OK, you can get right on that. I expect it by next week.

a self extracting executable that installs a patched version of Machines with stuff like the Multiplayer patch etc.
O.M.G. an automated patcher O.M.G.!

Would it be possible to do the self-extracting thing?
It's called the machines client.

Just a small question:

What is HotU? My best guess is NWN: Hordes of the Underdark, but I'm pretty sure that it isn't abandonware...
