Machines 2 Made in 5 EZ steps
« on: September 27, 2006, 01:24:11 pm »
I suggest we take a bit more relaxed approach to M2dev, Judas is VERY enthusiastic but he seems to forget nearly everyone is working and going to school
Since this is a 'spare-time project' its not possible to set deadlines, but if everyone try their best we can do this in a reasonable amount of time.

I divided the tasks up in steps.

Step 1

The Story team gets together in a separate thread to make a list of the units per race.
Also a list of needed sounds will be made.
After that, the storyline gets polished up and Mission Briefings etc. will be written properly.

Step 2

(Preferebly 3) 2D artists design the units by the list made by the storyteam, every artist his own race (to keep unity in a race, Believe this was a tip by Jeballi)
Units will be drawn in front, left-side, right-side (if needed), back and top view, details are drawn in seperate pics.
Draw pics in Color or in Grayscale (Write the colors in text though)
When a unit is done it will be checked by the leader of the 2D team and Judas or me (Foxx)...

The Sound team will start to create the effects and voices.
When sound-packs (per unit) are completed it will be checked by team leader and Judas or me.

Step 3

While the story team and 2D team are doing their thing, the 3D team will practice on recreating the original units, until the 2D team deliver finalized pics.
Like the 2D team, I suggest every 3D artist takes his own race. We got quite some 3D guys so perhaps they can work in pairs.
Trees and stuff can be made by one or two guys. (I believe there are standard trees and bushes in the modelling program but original stuff is preferred)
And when a unit is completed it will be checked by the 3D team leader and Judas or me.

Step 4

The programmers team should be familiarised with Ogre by now and can continu implementing the finished 3D models and finished soundeffects right away.

Step 5
Writting the AI and overall Gameplay (Menu's, Ingame Menu's, Controls, etc.) is next. We will see about that part by the time we get there. I think we should focus on the first 4 steps first!

If anyone disagrees or want to add something PM me please!

Good plan. Could use some more :cowbell:, but other than that good.
Instead of having the 2D artists work at a separate pace, we should work on getting units developed as quick as possible. I say we skip step two, and combine step 1 and 3.

I guess we can skip step 2 for the machines race and trees and stuff, but we arent even clear on how the other two are gonna look.

I think the plan how it is now, is a good plan :D
I think we shouldn't skin anything because if we skip anything for the machines, someone has to model the new machines, too. So there is one artist having just one job - to recreate the old models in 3d. that's not so good.

The next only thing I'd like to say is, that the designs (2d color/grayscale) should be permitted by the story team, because the thought about the whole thing and the artists have to catch their idea to make. It won't be good, if a artists does something that doesnt look in a single bit as the thing in story-team's mind. (or ?) Am I right?

:D HOLY POLYgon!! :D

Gaaarate. Other than the spelling of "continu", this plan sounds good. It should, however, be up for modifying when/if the time arises where something doesn't go to plan.

I would have if this blasted new fangled RC3 version of SMF kept my old stuff.

Revision is the key. Especially for an extra long post that may decide how Machines 2 will come out.

Just some tippies.

(Also Firefox 2.0 has spell checking AND shiny buttons.)

Also rank images are back from the dead.

Agreed with Poll

Personally I think that members with 300+ Posts shouldn't be treated as New-comers and be asked to correct the spelling mistakes they make :)
I think 1337 talk should be prohibited, but spelling mistakes(Especially with non-English people) should be allowed

The plan, as far as it goes, is interesting and of course gives a reasonable focus to the design.

But you do need to get started with some fundementals:
Get yourself a sourceforge project setup. You'll need it sooner or later and I would hope sooner.
The programmers need to be ramping up soonest. There is no point doing lots of art/design/storyboarding/etc if you have no implementors with the actual capability.

You need to be prototyping stuff up and swapping the results around. Get a simple model loaded onto a 2D (i.e. flat planar) landscape and write some pathing code.
This is simple stuff but will force you to solve many of the issues that will arise from using Ogre with either C++/Python (if that still holds :) ).

The programmers actually being able to deliver simple results are a must and personally what I would worry about. Once they give you the simple the hard just requires more time ;)

I also note you don't have "design" as one of the teams, you have storyboard and 2d/3d design. I suspect you could simply rename storyboard to design. Design is much much more than just the storyboard. It is the base of all decisions.

Ask me anything about Machines and I'll try to answer! I don't have the source code anymore. No idea what happened to it...
