I think that You need a opensource working game were everything is implemented so you only have to change
the code.
Learning an engine can be real hard.
I think for instance that Ogre has no Networking.... hard to implement!
Try to find a good opensource RTS game and modify!

Yeah we know that...
But if we find another game, that won't count for a game... It's going to be only a mod.
And there's another problem... The 1st person view... :|
Try to find that in another game. :|

BTW: Ogre is a Grapgical engine... You need to implement AI, audio, Networking,...
So yes it's going to be hard. (But there a re a lot of tutorilas for that and we can ask on the forums.)

(And I think this will be to big for us, but we can still try, can't we... :-) )

Cheers

Hello again,
Let me explain myself:
Go to Google and type: Cube engine, go to files section and download Cube.
Try it, play an FPS singleplayer and multiplayer with it.
What You got here is a complete game with networking, map editing in the game.
Today You can make maps for machines, tomorrow You can play an FPS machines game if
you replace the monsters with machines.
The sourcecode is included with the game and is C++ but highly readable.
I did try to recompile it and its OK.
All You have to do is make an RTS on top of it.
Be realistic and use something like this, but this only an example so don't follow this lead.

By the way I am not new here.
I'm reading all the postings for Year(s) now
I did like the spelling checker because I'm not a native English person.

Wow... I must say this is a very good looking engine... (Cube2 that is. :-P)
And has everything we need...

I'm convinced... But is it posible to redo the engine to work as a RTS???
If it is then I would rather use this engine, for sure. :-)

And sory for beeing a unbeliever, but I couldn't find a satisfiying engine. :/
Ogre was the best I could find.

And I see you're quite the programmer. :-)
Nice to have you here.  And why have you been hiding so long?? :-P

Cheers

Please load Cube 1 on your PC.
Then go to http://www.quadropolis.us/flexinode/list/3?from=30
There load the mod cube-bot-0.31.tar.gz
extract it to your cube dir.
Start the cube_bot_win ---> play and think about the AI and waypoints here implemented by Rick Helmus
Read his introduction. This mod is very interesting. But only made for Cube1.

Now, 3DFreak you did have to make a FPS + an RTS.
Now You already have a FPS, networking, sound, mapmaker...... and only the RTS to make.
Try to edit a map and there You will find that You can fly above the map looking down... first steps for an RTS.
Try and think about it. Greetings,
Ren

Will do...
Tommorow, when I come home. (Not on my computer right now.)

That is true, yes.
The camera is not to hard to make then.
Then there is the problem of a mouse, selecting units, but I guess this can be done easily to.
1 object that moves over the screen when you move the mouse. Like the camera that rotates the view.

This is not such a bad idea... It would make a lot of things easier.
And it would save us a lot of work. :-)

Shall we put all this in another thread, coz this is not the right one. :-)

Cheers

This is a wonderful find. It looks effective and not too difficult to learn, I might even try and learn to work with this engine if I can find the time and a few good tutorials. Thanks, Ren!

I would have if this blasted new fangled RC3 version of SMF kept my old stuff.

Revision is the key. Especially for an extra long post that may decide how Machines 2 will come out.

Just some tippies.

(Also Firefox 2.0 has spell checking AND shiny buttons.)

Also rank images are back from the dead.

Why you using RC3 aren't they  a little unsta

Don't listen to him, he's an idiot.

Back in the day, I used SMF RC3 to run the forums, which is sort of like a beta, except more stable. Since then I've upgraded to newer versions, but Dr. Bidoof here doesn't realize that. However, if you look at the bottom of the page you'll see Powered by SMF 1.1.3.

Wow it really sounds like you guys are getting this together, I wish there was someway I can help...but of course im only 16 and havent went to college to be a computer programmar or a computer hardware engineer yet soo...I dont kno that much...but I do learn quickly so I mean if there was some tutorials to the program yall are using then I could try to be of service. Actually now that I think about It I could try to make music files for the game. I have a program where I can edit almost anything in a song. so I could like download a bunch of just beats and like tones and techno and stuff and mix it all together and  filter it and add echoes and distortion and various other things to make some songs for the game, if yall considered me helping with it then when im done with one I could send it to whoever is the main person of all of this and he/she can tell me when they think about it and if they dont like it then I can just keep trying until we get it right or give me some kinda clue of what kinda music it is that yall want, wheather it be just a....god I cant get my tongue on it...ohh a musical (thats not the word im looking for at all but u kno what I mean) or like some low heavy rock er something for like the whole Battlefield/destruction/killing/blowing up kinda theme Idk just some thoughts hehe = P

Machine Head, Go for it! All help is welcome. I'm not sure if anyone has started working on music...
Here's some threads discussing what we want: http://wiredforwar.org/forums/index.php?board=12.0
Basically, techno/modern to suit large battle scenes. Some rock/metal mixes wouldnt be too bad for the Human race either.

ps. you're not the youngest :-P and I doubt many people here have a degree in computing or game making  :|
