The mapping Thread
« on: August 06, 2012, 06:59:46 pm »
Hey,
started getting into Spring Map Edit and I'm slowly finding some tricks and stuff.
First result in the attachment.

Gotta do some fixes though, as some ramps have little bumps. Problem is: The map is supposed to be a "Fortress - Central Domination" remake, so the ramps are going to be metal. That means they got to be completely even. Have to do a lot of pixel correction stuff in the Height Map PNG.

Good thing is: I only gotta do the stuff once, then I can just copy paste it whenever I need it.

Edit: Added the Height.PNG as an attachment. Corners needed to be done by hand instead of color gradiant, as I couldn't get an acceptable results with it. Worked with 800% zoom for precision. 8[

If somebody from the modeling Team reads this thread: I need the size of the models. Else I dunno how big the maps need to be.

At the moment I'm looking into 16x16 in Springmap Edit, but somehow I think that's still too small.

Please give me feedback on this problem. I don't want to make maps and then I gotta remake them or fix stuff cause they were too small.

Changed the map to 16x16. Also added plateaus, ramps from the high ground in the middle to the plateau surrounding, also added the "wall" around the bases.

Nice.

Orginal maps are very good. If you are planning to recreate orignal look of maps you can use metaex and psbex. With psbex you can extract models of tiles and with metaex you can obtain psf files where general map layout is stored.

You can save a lot of time by making first height maps of tiles. As an example the 'Central Dominance' is made from 144 tiles but only 19 of them are unique in shape. Also some of tiles are shared beetwen different maps.

Thanks, I'm gonna look into it. Will see if the old Machines will give me anything to work with.

Sadly the old Machines maps are positional imbalanced as hell anyway, so we'll see what I'll do with them. Probably take one starting position and mirror that quarter of the map.

The best way to check the size of the map is to put the map into the actual game. To do this, either you download the game from openmachines.sourceforge.net, or you give us the files to use the map. (or both)

Finished the Alpha version of the map. Finally got a bootable version.

I'll send it to people that need it for testing purposes on request per PM.
